Helpful Winter Tips

Updated: Nov 11, 2021

With cold weather upon us you may find the following tips helpful in staying warm this winter.

  • Ensure the thermostat is set to heat- most thermostats have three settings on them: Cool, Heat, and Off. Make sure yours is set to heat. After setting the thermostat to heat please give your heating system time to warm up. Depending upon the temperature in your apartment and outside, it may take a few hours to warm up sufficiently inside

  • Replace the batteries in your thermostat- This should be completed at least once per year and may be the reason your heat is not working

  • Make sure all heating vents and radiators are clear - Heating vents need to be clear of clothing and personal belongings to ensure proper airflow is maintained and warmth can circulate throughout your apartment. The same goes for radiators - ensure you do not have boxes and belonging on or against radiators as the warm air needs to be able to circulate throughout your apartment

  • If you have access to it, check the filter on your furnace. A clogged filter will hinder the system's ability to properly function and heat up. If you are unsure of how to check your filter please call us

  • Buy a draft guard and place it in front of your exterior doors. Draft guards will prevent cold drafts from entering your apartment

  • To keep windows from being drafty you can install curtains/drapes

  • Dress accordingly! While this sounds simple, we often see people walking around in shorts and short sleeved shirts in their apartments during the winter. A long sleeved shirt, sweatpants, and/or sweatshirt will go a long way in keeping warm!
